Many of the worksheets available for the Protein and DNA resources use a piece of software called PyMOL. PyMOL is a freely available structural viewer, which allows users to manipulate and interact with macromolecular structures. In order to use PyMOL effectively, we have put together some introductory resources below, which explain how to use PyMOL, and allow students to practise using it.
As well as using PyMOL, there is a simpler viewer on the PDBe website called LiteMol. LiteMol does not have as many interactive features available, however it is a good way to view structures quickly online. The PDBe website is a great way to get to grips with proteins and other macromolecules, as it allows you to search for different structures, and has a whole host of information available, including the online 3D viewer LiteMol.
We recommend that students begin by using these guides below until they are comfortable in using both PyMol and the PDBe website.
PyMol is available as a free download for education use, and can be downloaded here.
The PDBe website can be accessed here.
