Peter and Matt were delighted to be invited by the WMCTC to deliver a 1 hour A2 Chemistry Revision Lecture hosted in the School of Chemistry at Birmingham University on 26th March 2019, entitled "DNA, Proteins & Amino-Acids".
The WMCTC (West Midlands Chemistry Teachers Centre) have a very active annual programme of lectures and other events for students and teachers. You can find more details on their website at www.wmctc.co.uk.
Peter is currently a STEM Outreach Officer in the SAgE (Science) Faculty at Newcastle University, a role he has held since 2009; previously he was a secondary school chemistry teacher in a high-achieving Northumberland High School for 20 years (1989-2009). He is an A-level Chemistry marker for one of the major English Exam Boards (since 1995) and is also a Practical Adviser for the same Exam Board (since 2017). Peter also delivers freelance chemistry education consultancy for a range of organisations, including the Royal Society of Chemistry and CLEAPSS.
Peter is a regular invited presenter at WMCTC events, usually an annual A2 Chemistry Revision Lecture on a specific topic hosted by Birmingham University and a demonstration lecture, usually to a younger (KS3 or KS4) audience, hosted by another WM University.
Matt Conroy was a structure curator at the PDBe (Protein Data Bank in Europe) at the time of our lecture, where he had worked for the previous ten years. Before working for PDBe, Matt spent fifteen years in research at Sheffield University working out 3D structures of proteins involved in processes as diverse as photosynthesis and meningitis. At PDBe he brought together protein and DNA structures solved by researchers all over the world into one central place, making sure they were standardised and freely accessible. He also did a lot of outreach, exploring the wonderful world of proteins with scientists, students and the public.
We have placed the resources used at our WMCTC Revision Lecture on this page and hope they will be helpful to students preparing for their A2 Chemistry exams.
The main resource is our lecture Powerpoint presentation, on which certain slides will refer to the structure or function of a particular biomolecule - Matt demonstrated and explained the structural features live in the lecture, then kindly made short video clips with commentary after the lecture to post on the website. It will clearly state on the slide when to access each video clip.

NB. Videos RL1-3 were made and narrated by Dr Matt Conroy from his WMCTC revision lecture material; Video VA5 was already part of our Post-16 Learning Resources developed with the PDBe and was made and narrated by Adam Stubbs as part of a summer undergraduate project at Newcastle University in 2017.
